Lookup A Fund
The key to success is a balanced portfolio. How? By keeping the right 'mix' of what and how much you own.
But first you should know what you own. If you don't know, follow these three
easy steps. Use our mock-up of Morningstar's Quicktake Report to learn how to
look up mutual funds.
Go
to Morningstar. Enter
the mutual fund symbol or name in the Quicktake® Reports box. (in the upper
left corner). In our example below it's called "Your
Mutual Fund Name Here.
You'll get the Quicktake Report back in a moment.
First, the type. Is it a stock, bond, or hybrid mutual
fund? Go to the
Morningstar
Category
in the right hand column. In our example, this is a STOCK FUND.
Second, is it domestic or international? Go to the
Morningstar
Category
again. In our example, this is an INTERNATIONAL FUND. (Internationals may be characterized as international, foreign, world or have a regional / country name.) If you're using
RetireMite™,
you're finished! Just select your account, input the fund name and type, and the
$ amount. RetireMite™ takes over and automatically compares this with your
balanced portfolio model and shows you if it fits.
Third, how big are the companies this mutual fund holds? (Company size is determined by the total market worth of a company, which is called its market capitalization or 'market cap'). Look in the
grid in What
Does This Fund Own?
section to find out. In our example, this fund is a LARGE. Look in the Asset
Allocation %
section if
you need more information (you may want to do this for 'hybrids').
There's lots of other information as
well, like past performance, risk & return, valuation (is it value, growth
or a blend), and the sectors and holdings the fund is invested in.
